Our History
Supporting The Industry Since the 1960s
From its early beginnings in Edinburgh to its current base in Bonnyrigg, Industrial Paint & Powder has continued to adapt, grow and support customers across Scotland’s coatings industry.
Established In Edinburgh
The business was established in Hanover Street, Edinburgh as G Laing & Co., supplying paints and oils to businesses across the Lothians and Borders. Founded by James Laing Snr, the company built its early reputation on reliable supply and strong customer service.
A Growing Business
As the business developed, G Laing & Co. moved to the Roseburn area of Edinburgh. In 1964, James Stanley Laing joined the company as Sales Manager, continuing the family involvement and helping support the company’s ongoing growth.
A New Name And Direction
In the early 1970s, the company became Neogene Paints Scotland Ltd, following a close working relationship with supplier Neogene Paints Ltd in London. Around the same time, the business moved to Lanark Road, operating from an old B-listed church building.
Industrial Paint & Powder Ltd
In the early 1990s, the company changed its name to Industrial Paint & Powder Ltd as the business model evolved and new supplier relationships were introduced. Robin George Laing joined the business in late 1991 as Sales Manager, helping the company continue to move forward.
A New Chapter In Bonnyrigg
James Stanley Laing retired in 2004, with Robin Laing taking over the running of the business. In 2009, the company moved to Bonnyrigg, Midlothian, where it remains based today.
Continuing The Family Connection
Industrial Paint & Powder continues to operate as a family business, supporting customers with dependable supply, product knowledge and practical advice.
In 2025, Kiera Laing joined the company as an administrator, continuing the family connection into another generation.
